BUFFALO, N.Y. — Thehe Lake Erie-Niagara River Ice Boom is scheduled to begin installation Tuesday for the 55th consecutive year.
The boom will be placed near the outlet of Lake Erie and the Niagara River, reducing the potential for ice jams in the River. Ice getting into the Niagara can cause damage to shoreline property and make it harder for water to get to hydro-electric power plants.
The New York Power Authority is authorized to use the 1.7 mile long boom.
