LEWISTON, N.Y. — Firefighters responded to a fire Saturday night at an apartment building on Oriole Lane in the Town of Lewiston.
Responders were dispatched to the Woods at Blairville apartment complex in the 800 block of Oriole Lane at 10:33 p.m. Saturday.
Lewiston Fire officials told 2 On Your Side that two women were injured in the fire.
Lewiston Fire Chief Les Myers said Sunday evening that one woman was taken to Erie County Medical Center with "burns and airway injuries when attempting to put out the fire."
He said another woman was taken to Mount St. Mary's Hospital, where she was treated for minor smoke inhalation and released.
Myers added that a dog was rescued and reunited with its owner.
No firefighters were injured.
Among the fire companies on the scene were Lewiston Fire Company No. 1, Upper Mountain Volunteer Fire Company, Youngstown Volunteer Fire Company, Ransomville Volunteer Fire Company and the Town of Niagara Fire Company.
Firefighters say two apartments sustained the most severe damage.
"We’re happy with the stop we made in the two apartments we were able to contain it to. Because we’ve seen apartment complexes like this go from one end to the other," Myers said.
Christopher Bald lived in an upper apartment in the complex. His family and three pets made it out safely.
"It’s not the material items up there, it’s the memories," he said.
A Facebook fundraiser has already raised more than $5,000 for the victims.
Another Go Fund Me account is set up for a single mother with three children who also lost everything in the fire.
The fire is currently under investigation.
