NEW YORK — WNY homeowners who experienced damage from July’s tornadoes can now apply for New York State grants.
New York State granted up to $5 million to support homeowners in Chautauqua, Erie, Essex, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, and Warren Counties. Homeowners can apply for up to $50,000 in emergency repairs, according to Governor Kathy Hochul's Office.
From July 10 to 16, 22 tornadoes touched down in the state, along with severe thunderstorms, wind, and flooding causing damage to various communities. Gov. Hochul announced $11 million total in emergency assistance for eligible homeowners and communities statewide.
“After extreme weather events caused major damage across Upstate New York, we are providing rapid relief for impacted residents and municipalities,” said Gov. Hochul. “While I continue to urge the federal government to act quickly on our request for an emergency declaration, my administration remains committed to assisting affected New Yorkers so they can recover from these devastating storms.”
Homeowners can receive funding to cover urgent repair costs to bring their homes to a safe and habitable condition. Applicants must have incomes at or below 100 percent of Area Median Income to qualify, said the Governor’s Office. The New York State Homes and Community Renewal oversees the program and money. Grants are awarded based on program guidelines and the scope of work approved by local administrators.
Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel said the funds are important for the storm recovery efforts.
“The emergency funds for Chautauqua County will help communities like Forestville rebuild stronger and better than ever,” said Wendel. “I am deeply moved by the resilience and determination of our community coming together to help neighbors, friends and family immediately following the storm.”

Gov. Hochul requested federal aid to support storm response and recovery efforts in the state, stated the Governor's Office. If approved, FEMA can provide reimbursement for debris removal, emergency protection, and actions that reduce additional damage to critical infrastructure.
