Heather’s Weather Whys: What makes a drought?

It’s easy to picture what a drought looks like, but defining when one begins and ends is an entirely different story.

Buffalo is in the middle of what could be the longest stretch of 90-degree days on record at eight days. It’s been a really dry stretch too.

That has the word “drought” becoming more popular. We know what a drought is, but do we really?

The latest release of the U.S. Drought Monitor does not officially highlight Western New York as an area of concern, but if this pattern continues, drought may become a bigger part of the conversation.

Drought is more than just a meteorological phenomena. It’s also climatological and hydrological and even economical.

Droughts also look very different depending on which kind of climate region you are looking at. For example, a drought in Phoenix, Arizona, would look different and have very different impacts from a drought in the Great Lakes region.

As of the most recent outlooks from the U.S. Drought Monitor, Western New York is not technically included within any drought risk area, but the longer this hot, dry spell lasts, the more the region is going to need to plan for potential impacts.
