BUFFALO, N.Y. — A bill that aimed to improve habitat connectivity for wildlife has been vetoed by Gov. Kathy Hochul.
The New York Wildlife Crossing Act would have directed the state Department of Transportation and Thruway Authority to identify areas along highways that are frequently used as animal crossings.
Grants would then be made available to build animal crossing infrastructure, such as bridges and tunnels, to increase safety for drivers and improve animal habitats.
The bill received bipartisan support and passed in both the State Senate and State Assembly, but it was not signed by the governor.
