CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. — Experts are expecting record-breaking travel numbers this year. Whether you’re hitting the road or the sky, it can be a stressful time for passengers. For those going through Buffalo Niagara International Airport, there’s a program that might give you time to pause and get comfort.
It’s called the Paws for Love program. It’s through the SPCA Serving Erie County. Travelers can find friendly therapy dogs ready to offer pets, cuddles, and a calming presence. The initiative is volunteer-based and pairs certified therapy dogs with individuals and groups in need of some stress relief and emotional support.
Jake and Maya were on hand Tuesday morning to offer support. Allan Monaco is Jake's owner. Michael Pohl is Maya's owner. They both have been volunteers for several years.
Monaco said, "They start petting them and you could see how they just unwind. Because people that fly it are sometimes filled with anxiety, stress, tension, you know, emotions."
Pohl said, "it's amazing what these animals can do for people."
The therapy dogs are by some key areas throughout the airport, including the arrivals and the baggage claim. It offers travelers a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of traveling.
Emily Gola was traveling to Long Island, NY. She said "it just brought me a smile to my face, you know, traveling through the airport. I had to get up early this morning, earlier than I wanted to. I was just able to get some love and some smiles from them."
Fairlee Fischer is traveling for the holiday. She told us she is an anxious flyer. She said "It makes her calm" seeing Jake and Maya. She explained how she could have used them "as soon as [she] got in the door."
Paws for Love is not only serving travelers inside the airport but also outside. Therapy dogs can also visit hospitals, schools, libraries, and other areas around Erie County.
