BUFFALO, N.Y. — The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is reminding riders to register their snowmobiles before winter hits. Snowmobile registration must be renewed annually. Riders can renew online at the DMV website, by mail, or in person at a DMV office.
All snowmobiles in New York need to be registered and marked with a valid sticker. Online registration allows riders to use a temporary certificate, valid for 15 days, before their sticker and registration card arrive in the mail.
Riders can learn more about registration in New York on the DMV website here.
“I’m optimistic this will be a fun winter for snowmobilers and other outdoor enthusiasts in New York,” Mark J.F. Schroeder, DMV Commissioner and Chair of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, said in a statement.
“So, before the snow flies, remember your snowmobile registration must be renewed every year. DMV is here to help customers get registered and ready for the trails.”
Out of state riders can register a snowmobile for New York as long as its registered in their home state. Riders can use the NYS Registration for Out-of-State Snowmobile service to receive the 15-day registration and operate their snowmobile here immediately. DMV will then send a permanent registration in the mail.
The DMV reminds snowmobilers to always carry registration and proof of insurance documents while riding. Holders of snowmobile safety certificates must also carry the certificate when they are snowmobiling.
