BUFFALO, N.Y. — As the 2024 Olympics kick off in Paris many local places are sharing their connections to the popular games.
Forest Lawn shared in a social media post made on Friday ahead of the opening ceremonies that an Olympic athlete rests on their grounds.
In the post they wrote:
"As the Olympic opening ceremony takes place today, it’s a fitting time to remember the legacy of Charles Reidpath. Reidpath was a prominent track athlete from Lafayette High School in Buffalo and Syracuse University, graduating in 1912. He competed in the Stockholm Olympics, winning the 400-meter race with a record time of 48.2 seconds and anchoring the 4x400 meter relay team to a world record of 3:16.6. Reidpath donated his gold medals to Syracuse University.
He served in World War II, retiring as a Brigadier General from the NYS National Guard. In Buffalo, he was the director of buildings and contributed to constructing the Federal Reserve Bank building, now New Era. His cousin was Isabelle Reidpath Martin, wife of Darwin Martin.
Charles is buried in Section One, Lot 21."
