ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Spencer Brown drew a flag when he came to Josh Allen's defense during Sunday's victory in Indianapolis. Now he says he's been fined for it.
The Buffalo Bills offensive tackle said he's been fined $12,000 for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty during the second quarter in their 30-20 win against the Colts. It came with 2 minutes, 14 seconds left before halftime, when Allen scored on a 13-yard touchdown run before being thrown down out of bounds by Colts safety Nick Cross.
Cross was not flagged, but Brown's response — rushing to confront Cross — got the officials' attention.
"An argument/conversation that takes place on a NFL field cost roughly 12K if anyone was curious," Brown said Wednesday on social media.
Allen's touchdown run capped an eight-play, 70-yard drive that consumed 4:18 and gave Buffalo a 17-13 lead. It also gave Allen 57 career touchdown runs, tying him with O.J. Simpson for second all-time in team history. Thurman Thomas is No. 1 with 65.
Former Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who recently offered to pay a fine for rookie linebacker and Lancaster native Joe Andreessen, said he saw nothing wrong with what Brown did Sunday.
"Seemed like a friendly conversation to me….cmon Roger," Fitzpatrick said, referring to NFL commissioner and Jamestown native Roger Goodell.
"Just know Bills Mafia appreciates it every time you protect 17….it’s teach tape on how serious an offensive lineman needs to take his responsibilities."
Fitzpatrick also discussed the play on his own podcast, where he said he and Andrew Whitworth would send $12,000 to a charity of Brown's choice.
Brown on Thursday said he would make a $12,000 donation to Mission 22, a national veteran nonprofit organization that provides support to veterans and their families through outreach, events, and programs.
