Solar eclipse events happening in WNY

The historic natural phenomenon has stirred up quite the buzz and viewing events are being held across WNY.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The total solar eclipse is set to happen on Monday, April 8, and will be visible in Western New York.

The historic natural phenomenon has stirred up quite the buzz and viewing events are being held across WNY. 

The solar eclipse will be visible here shortly after 3:00 p.m. for about three and a half minutes. 

If you're wondering where solar eclipse viewing events are near you? Here is a list of family-friendly places where you're invited to go and watch it: 

New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, tourism stakeholders in Niagara Falls, NY will be working with NASA to provide programming and special events around the eclipse

The special events and exhibits will begin April 4, 2024, at various locations in Niagara Falls, including Niagara Falls Public Libraries, The Underground Railroad Heritage Center, The Aquarium of Niagara, the New York Power Authority Power Vista, the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute and Niagara Falls State Park. 

All of these events will be free and open to the public throughout the weekend leading up to April 8. 

Experience the Great North American Eclipse from a special viewing area at this excitement-filled event. Enjoy food trucks, entertainment, eclipse-related activities, and demonstrations, plus eclipse souvenirs. Feel the energy of viewing this once-in-a-lifetime experience with your fellow attendees guided by Buffalo State University experts. 

Tickets: $125 VIP package (limited availability, including reserved parking and seating, plus private reception area with open bar), $40 general admission (reduced price of $35 each when purchasing four tickets). 

A team of NASA/JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) Solar System Ambassadors will be sharing their experiences, specialized telescopes, astro-imaging, and more with ticket holders at the EAclipse Celebration on April 8,

Tickets are on sale for the Friends of Knox Farm State Park EAclipse Celebration on Monday, April 8, 2024, from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 each, children under the age of seven are free, parking is free, and safe eclipse viewers will be provided to ticket holders. All 30+ programming activities throughout the historic stables area will also be free to ticket holders.

The “Total Eclipse in the 716” free viewing party will be the first event at the renovated Terminal B, which will hold a grand opening and ribbon cutting earlier that day. ECHDC and Rich Entertainment Group invite Western New Yorkers and visitors to experience the eclipse at one of the most central points in the path of totality, amid picturesque waterfront views.

“Total Eclipse in the 716” is a free event that will feature live music, food trucks, vendors, outdoor fitness classes, and a Kids Zone with a DIY pinhole projector station, a chalk-art zone, and a bounce house. All attendees will receive a free pair of eclipse glasses, courtesy of Upstate Honda Dealers. Activities begin at 1 p.m.

Following the eclipse, runners can participate in the Total Eclipse of the Sun Run, with a 5k planned for 6 p.m. and a “fun run” at 5 p.m.

Niagara Falls (Ontario and New York), as well as Fort Erie and Buffalo, New York, are located directly in the path of totality to experience a full solar eclipse. This means that this area will experience the longest period of time where the moon will completely eclipse the sun resulting in total darkness, making the destination a prime viewing spot. Free, interactive, and educational programming for all ages across the Niagara River corridor.

A Total Solar Eclipse will be occurring over the greater Rochester area and Mumford, NY on April 8, at 3:20 p.m.! Mumford, NY is in the Path of Totality and will experience a 3 minute and 32 second total solar eclipse.  

Genesee Country Village & Museum is excited to be offering the opportunity to experience totality in a 19th-century Historic Village – plus three days of celestial celebrations leading up to the total solar eclipse (April 5 – 7). Plan and select your unique home base for Eclipse Viewing Day – whether that is a private building in the Historic Village or the Drive-In/Festival Grounds option or you can select the individual general admission ticket option for this event. All packages include eclipse viewing glasses, all-day historical programming, and festivities in the Village, Gallery, and Nature Center. 

The Erie County Fairgrounds is hosting a "Total-ity Fun" outdoor event on April 8 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.  There will be live music. Tickets are $50 per carload, which includes parking, eclipse glasses, and access to portable toilets.  No outside food or beverages are allowed, but there will be food vendors available to purchase food.  For more information: https://www.ecfair.org/.

Old Fort Niagara is holding a solar eclipse viewing event on April 8.  There will be special programming events prior to the eclipse from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. They will also have a Solar Bead Activity and Solar Eclipse spinning wheel activity presented by Lewiston Porter Schools. Beaver Hallow will be hosting a Revitalize Under the Eclipse – Your Path to Wellness three-day two-night retreat April 7-9, 2024. The event will include access to property recreation including an indoor pool, saunas, hot tub, fully-equipped gym, and outdoor recreation. All Meals and non-alcoholic beverages, swag bags, facilitated programming and eclipse viewing glasses. Prices for the event are single occupancy for $1,250 and double occupancy is$950/person.
