Donation drive on Grand Island helps send supplies to areas devastated by Hurricane Helene

The event brought out hundreds of Western New Yorkers with essential supplies in tow.

GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. — It has been over a week since Hurricane Helene swept through much of the Southeast, causing destruction, and leaving people lacking basic needs.

Western New Yorkers on Saturday answered the call for much needed relief with a donation drive.

Community members showed up to the Grand Island town hall with cars full of donations. They donated everything from water, canned goods, cleaning supplies and more.

The trailer collecting the supplies is part of a group effort to send 14 truck-loads of relief down to Boone, N.C. It will stop in Fillmore, N.Y., to collect even more supplies and then make the journey south.

Event organizer Justin Karcher says the day was a nonstop affair. He says hundreds of Good Samaritans showed up to help out.

"We've seen hundreds of people come out. I couldn't even put a guess on it. I'm so busy hauling stuff away, I wish I could say thank you to every single one of them. But hundreds of people have come down. We are three quarters full with this trailer right now," Karcher said.

The packed truck made its way to Fillmore around 4 p.m. Saturday. If you're still looking to help out, you can click here for a GoFundMe sponsoring the trailer's trip down to North Carolina.
