High winds down trees, knock out power in some parts Western New York

High winds caused plenty of power outages Sunday morning due to downed electric lines, toppled trees.

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. — Thousands of customers in Western New York woke up to windy, rainy conditions and power outages Sunday.

More than 5,000 NYSEG customers were without power as of 8 a.m. Sunday, but that number dropped to just a few hundred by about 9:30 a.m. 

NYSEG gave an estimated restoration time of 11:15 a.m. for those who remained in the dark late Sunday morning.

The majority of the outages were in Cheektowaga. Some of the hardest hit areas were along George Urban Boulevard, Cayuga Road, Broadway, Harlem Road, and Meadowbrook Parkway.

Hundreds of customers also lost power in Clarence, Depew, Elma, Orchard Park, Sloan, and West Seneca.

As of 8:15 a.m., National Grid's website reported nearly 800 customers without power. Those outages were scattered in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties.
