Students in Buffalo take part in Restaurant Week

Buffalo School of Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management are offering something special for their guests.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo's fall edition of Restaurant Week is here! Many local spots are inviting people to come and try out their menus.

The Buffalo School of Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management is getting in on that fun, too! They are serving up something special on their menu for Restaurant Week with a lunch combo: a drink, lunch, and dessert for $15.

It's a chance to support students and grab a tasty meal. The students are the ones cooking the food and serving it to customers.

"I just love interacting with the customers, giving them the food," student Theresa Rodriguez said.

Students are learning valuable skills not only in the kitchen, but also outside too. Michelle Cimato is one of the culinary instructors helping out with the participation during Restaurant Week.

"It's amazing. It's one of the best opportunities I've ever hoped for," Cimato said. "Working with the kids, working with all the great people in the school building, [it's] a really good opportunity for the kids."

It is also a great opportunity for people to try both new and old dishes.

Cimato said, they're "showcasing the restaurant and the food [that the students] prepare and how they serve all guests. It's a really great opportunity for them. It's really exciting to see how they start knowing nothing about, even kitchen utensils, how to use the dishwasher, how to crack an egg. It is really exciting to see them grow and expand their culinary knowledge."

Shemeya Rivers is in 11th grade. She wants to open up her own business one day. She said her courses in school have helped her pursue that dream.

"People think like, 'oh I'm going to open a chef business'. They think it's just going to be about cooking and getting money," Rivers said. "But no, you have to get supplies, you have to order stuff, you have to calculate."

The student's cafe in downtown Buffalo on West Huron Street serves around 150 lunches a day, according to spokesperson Jeffery Hammond.

They're open for breakfast at 7:30a.m to 10 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.

Restaurant week in Buffalo continues until Sunday, Oct. 20. A full list of participating businesses can be found here.
