A WNY nonprofit is asking for help with back rent for storage units

A WNY man says his storage units are going up for auction. They contain donated men's suits given to the community for special occasions.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — This time, Dewitt Lee is on the receiving end of good fortune.

"I've been struggling for a long time to maintain our storage units. This is going to push us towards more sustainability," Lee says.

Dewitt is in a bind. Three days ago, he was in Toronto for an event before he got the call that he couldn't access his storage units.

"Since we haven't had a storefront for some time now, we had to rely on storage units," Lee said.

Inside are men's suits that he gives away for special occasions, such as the first day of school, Easter, you name it. He had a sponsor to help pay for his units but found out that the sponsor stopped footing the bill two months ago.

Now six of his storage units, filled with clothes, are up for auction Friday. All day Thursday, Lee has been getting $25 donations from the community.

Lee: "I don't have access to any of our clothes."

Lee: "I don't know. I haven't been able to get an answer because I have no way to reach him, so I believe the company is out of business."

Throughout the day, folks like Christine Lucas have been stopping by to help.

"Somebody out there has to know or has the heart to have some space, and they can do it for him for free," Lucas said.

Victory Sports, a Clarence-based business, offered to sponsor a unit for a month, putting Lee almost halfway to his goal. He says he needs $7,500 to cover the storage unit costs for the year.
