ALBANY, N.Y. — Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Friday that $52.1 million will be used for purchasing accessible buses, paratransit, and other transportation alternatives. This funding is to support older citizens and people with disabilities.
A total of 133 initiatives will be awarded a portion of the funding.
“Access to quality transportation makes a significant difference in daily lives by allowing people to get to work, go shopping, or obtain medical care, and we must do all we can to ensure that it’s available to all New Yorkers,” Governor Hochul said in a statement.
Western New York is seeing a number of these projects come to fruition, including:
- Erie County: Purchase of New/Replacement Buses for Delivery of Specialized Services, $244,208
- Erie Regional Housing Development Corporation: Purchase of New/Replacement Buses for Delivery of Specialized Services, $175,718
- Lifespan of Greater Rochester, Inc.: Provide Elderly and People with Disabilities with Customized, Individualized and Affordable Travel Options, Expand Volunteer Transportation Services, $593,710
- Rochester General Hospital: Purchase of New/Replacement Buses for Delivery of Specialized Services, $142,227
- Rochester General Hospital: Personnel and Vehicle Expenses to Enable Creation of Specialized Transit Program to Transport Discharged Patients Without Appropriate Transportation, $145,923
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Senator Schumer said, “Whether it’s a trip to work, the grocery store, the doctor’s office, or to see family, seniors and people with disabilities need a safe and reliable way to commute."
Hochul added: "Thanks to this assistance from the Biden-Harris Administration, we can help expand transportation options for older citizens and people with disabilities, making it easier for them to get where they need to go safely and affordably, and improving their quality of life."
