Deadly shooting of a 3-year-old leaves a Buffalo neighborhood shaken

No arrests have been announced as of Monday evening in the shooting death on Friday night.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Waldemar Viera and his fiancé were sitting on the front porch of their home on Domedion Avenue Friday night enjoying the hot summer night and their neighborhood.

People were out grilling, kids were playing when things turned to chaos.

"All of a sudden we just started hearing shooting and these guys walk across the street and everybody started running," Viera said.

He and his fiancé are seen on surveillance video diving for cover on their front porch; shocked by what happened.

In that same video, two people are seen running away from the scene of the shooting across the street. Viera has turned it over to Buffalo Police.

"I can still hear the kids playing and laughing and enjoying the day. We literally looked that way seeing the guy holding the gun shooting towards that way... we didn't know what to do at that moment," he said.

3-year-old Ramone Carter and his 7-year-old sister were caught in the middle of the gunfire. Carter later died at ECMC and his sister was grazed by a bullet according to a Buffalo Police spokesperson.

Viera and the entire neighborhood have been sending their condolences to the family. As a father, he can't imagine the heartbreak they're going through.

"It shook me up for a few days and even today me and my fiancé are talking about it today it's sad and to go down the street and see the tricycle and the bears and the candles. I put myself in their situation and I wouldn't know what to do," Viera said.

A memorial for the toddler has been put together on Domedion Avenue, with photos of the 3-year-old and stuffed animals attached to a flag pole. Carter's family held a vigil for him Saturday night.

Rose, another neighbor on the street, told 2 On Your Side that since the shooting things have been a lot quieter, as if the entire block has been mourning.

Viera said before the shooting Friday night he and his fiancé had talked about how they love their street and the families that live on it. They still love it, even afterward but can't understand why anyone in their right mind would bring violence to their Eastside neighborhood.

"The fact that anybody in their right mind gets the idea 'hey let me just shoot' when there are a lot of kids out here playing around and not think we're not going to hit nobody it's sad," Viera said.

He added: "I would love for young guys to be able to have the right mind in their head, you don't do that when there are kids around, you don't do that period. If you have an issue with the person go talk, you know there are lots of ways to solve issues instead of just shooting around."

During a press conference on Saturday, city officials said that investigators with the Buffalo Police Department had interviewed two people in connection to the shooting and recovered a gun from the scene. As of Monday night, however, no arrest had been made.

Crimestoppers has offered a $7,500 award for information that could lead to an arrest.
