WEST SENECA, N.Y. — Leisure Rinks in West Seneca was closed down Wednesday night due to a leak of ammonia in the facility.
Emergency responders we spoke to say everyone inside was evacuated and nobody was hurt.
"It looked like one of the compressors failed about ten gallons of product," said Jay Knavel, District Chief. "The business is going to be closed for a little while they do have some professionals coming in to take care of the equipment."
There's no word on when they expect to be reopened.
Chris Roswell, General Manger of Leisure Rinks, issues this statement:
"Last evening, Leisure Rinks experienced an ammonia leak. Our staff quickly identified the issue and evacuated the rink as per our Emergency Evacuation Plan. As a result of prior training and quick thinking, all customers and staff were evacuated safely. We sincerely thank Orchard Park Fire, Police, EMS and Erie County Haz-Mat Services for their quick and professional response. Their assistance was invaluable in containing the issue and keeping everyone safe. I would especially like to thank all our staff members and management on duty last evening. Decisive and appropriate decisions were made by them to ensure the safety of everyone in the building during the incident. We will re-open when the issue has been repaired and it is safe to do so."
Earlier this year, Holiday Twin Rinks in Cheektowaga had to evacuate due to carbon monoxide.
The rinks were shut down for more than a week following an incident on December 27, after which more than 100 patrons were treated at local hospitals for carbon monoxide exposure.
