CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. — Newly surfaced video suggests people at Holiday Twin Rinks knew Carbon Monoxide detectors were going off inside the arena, days before more than 100 people got sick.
In the video acquired by 2 on Your Side, people are seen on an empty sheet of ice discussing the CO alarms going off, and someone else responding that they are aware but that they can't turn it off.
"The carbon dioxide [sic] alarm is going off," one person said.
Another person could be heard saying "yeah, we know, we can't fix it."
Cheektowaga Emergency Services Manager Jason Tolsma told 2 On Your Side tonight, "There is no investigation. Code Enforcement has provided the business owner with corrective actions that need to completed before they can reopen to the public. Code Enforcement will also conduct an inspection of the facility to verify that all corrective actions have taken place prior to the opening. The business is closed to the public until January 2nd. We are not aware of anyone that was admitted to the hospital from this incident. All patients that we were aware of, were treated and released the same day."
The Forks Fire Department reported finding levels between 200 and 400 parts per million. The acceptable level for Carbon monoxide (CO) is just 0-10 parts per million.
Firefighters and National Fuel traced the leak to those malfunctioning heaters. According to Cheektowaga Tolsma, those heaters were fixed on Thursday by a crew hired by the rink and inspected.
Tolsma told 2 On Your Side, in total 111 people were treated at various local hospitals for symptoms ranging from lightheadedness to stomach problems. They were all treated with oxygen and were released. No one had to be admitted.
