Deadline to apply for Erie County public art fund approaching

Local artists have until noon on Monday, December 16 to apply.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Time is running out for local artists to apply for Erie County's new public art fund, as leaders look to support and promote projects at some popular destinations.

The deadline to apply for the 'Arts in Public Places' project is noon on Monday, December 16.

According to the county, potential locations for the artwork include: Seneca Bluffs Natural Habitat Park, Como Lake Park, Ellicott Creek Park, Erie County Health Mall, and the Buffalo Convention Center.

Each proposal should include either community engagement or promote cultural awareness.

"Art beautifies our community in many ways and shows that we care about the place we live in, transforming regular spaces into artistic creations that spur conversations and enrich our lives," wrote Deputy County Executive Lisa M. Chimera in a statement to 2 On Your Side.

The Department of Environment & Planning and the 'Arts in Public Places' Committee will ultimately select which projects are chosen. Applicants are expected to have experience working with the size, budget, and material of the art they're proposing, which the county added should be suitable for the Western New York climate.

Artists must submit a proposal, resume, or CV, five photographic examples of work, three professional references, and four short answer questions. A link to the online application can be found here.

$200,000 has been allocated for the project which means the county could select one large installation or multiple ones.

More information for applicants is also available.

After the deadline passes on Monday, the following schedule will apply:

  • Early to mid-January 2025 - Artist callbacks to discuss concept proposals (either in-person or via video conference)
  • March 1, 2025 - Artist selection submitted to Legislature for approval
  • Spring 2025 - Selected Artist(s) under contract
  • Spring – Winter 2025 - Construction and Installation
