Effort underway to help people impacted by Warsaw fire

Items and gift cards are being sought to assist those who lost their homes and belongings in Main Street apartment building fire.

WARSAW, N.Y. — After a devastating fire earlier this week in the Wyoming County village of Warsaw the community is rallying to help those affected by the blaze.

When the fire broke out Tuesday, about a dozen people were displaced from the apartments inside a three-story building at the corner of North Main and Frank streets.

Monica Jett, who runs the Warsaw Dry Cleaners in the nearby village of Wyoming, has helped organize an effort to help those residents, and her shop has become a clearing house of sorts for donations for those who had to leave their possessions behind.

"The response has been pretty good," Jett told 2 On Your Side on Friday.

"The Make a Difference committee from the Wyoming Correctional Facility actually stopped in this morning with a pile of blankets and pillows and air mattresses and toiletry items which is a really great thing."

Jett says that gift cards are of great assistance as well for those who don't have any place right now to put donated items, which will allow them to obtain precisely what they need after they are allowed to re-enter the building to salvage whatever possessions they can, which one resident told us might not be until this weekend.

Those interested in assisting may call Warsaw Dry Cleaners at 585-495-6370 or go to the Warsaw Dry Cleaners Facebook page which Jett says will be updated regarding the items most in need.

Donations may also be made through the office of New York State Assemblyman David DiPietro at 411 Main St. in East Aurora.
