LANCASTER, N.Y. — Fire departments across New York looking for new volunteers, and part of that effort was seen this weekend.
The Town Line Volunteer Fire Department, like so many other fire stations across the state, hosted a recruiting event called RecruitNY Weekend.
Jennifer Broska, president of Town Line fire department, said these events are critical because it's tough to recruit people. She said it's been that way for the past decade, but added that she understands because volunteer firefighters do not get paid.
"We rely 100 percent on volunteers," she said. "It doesn't take as much time as you think."
Broska said big cities in the state are usually the ones to have paid fire departments, while smaller areas are all volunteer. She says if you're not one to want to go into a burning building, that's OK because there's many jobs to choose from, including being a driver, EMT, exterior firefighter and more.
Broska said about 75 to 80 percent of their calls are EMT calls, so they're also looking for those.
