Buffalo officials add improvements to winter snow plan

Acting Mayor Christopher Scanlon and City of Buffalo DPW announced key updates to the city's 2024-2025 winter snow plan.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The City of Buffalo will soon implement key updates for plans to enhance the city's winter snow plan for 2024-2025.

Acting Mayor Christopher P. Scanlon and City of Buffalo Department of Public Works (DPW) announced on Friday, Nov. 1 several key updates to the winter snow plan.

The changes plan to bolster Buffalo's emergency response capabilities, improve snow plowing and clearing operations, and enhance resident services, ensuring a safer and more efficient winter season, according to city officials.

“This winter, we’re focused on proactive preparation and community support," said Scanlon. "By investing in specialized equipment, boosting our fleet, and making targeted improvements, we’re prepared to handle Buffalo’s toughest winter challenges with greater precision and responsiveness."

The city's 2024-2025 winter snow plan was first presented to the Buffalo Common Council in April. The plan will be resubmitted with revisions to the Council at its upcoming meeting.

In a press release by the city, the following improvements were outlined:

Enhanced Emergency Response Capabilities - In partnership with the Buffalo Fire Department (BFD) and Buffalo Police Department (BPD), the city has implemented new emergency response tools:

  • Buffalo Fire Department (BFD): A special response mini-ambulance has been added to navigate narrow or hard-to-reach areas, ensuring prompt medical assistance.
  • Buffalo Police Department (BPD):  The addition of a Command Vehicle will enhance BPD's ability to respond swiftly and effectively in dynamic situations, providing increased flexibility for emergency operations.

Expanded Snow Plowing and Clearing Operations - To tackle Buffalo’s notorious snowfall, the DPW has strengthened its snow management fleet:

  • Streets: Seven new snowplows and eight front loaders have been deployed, with seven more plows expected mid-season to bolster clearing efforts.
  • Engineering: Six additional light and medium-duty pickup trucks, outfitted with plows, will assist with off-road operations, enhancing capacity in hard-to-reach areas.
  • Parks: Four new medium-duty trucks with plows have been introduced to help maintain clear paths within Buffalo’s park spaces, enabling more focused efforts on streets and sidewalks.

Vehicle Relocation for Improved Access - The Parking Department has introduced two mobile vehicular lift units, designed to relocate vehicles obstructing emergency routes and snow removal operations. This resource will allow for smoother, uninterrupted access throughout the city during winter storms.

New Warming Center for North District Residents - The city has designated the Northwest Buffalo Community Center on Lawn Avenue as the new warming center for the North District, replacing the Asarese-Matters Community Center. This updated location provides residents with better accessibility and expanded resources for warmth and shelter during extreme winter conditions.
