City of Buffalo keeping tabs on Cazenovia Creek with potential for flooding

City officials urge anyone who lives in flood-prone areas to "take precautions and remove valuables from low-lying areas in your house."

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The City of Buffalo is keeping close watch of the water levels at Cazenovia Creek and preparing for potential flooding as rain falls and temperatures climb.

"Earlier this evening, the ice field on Cazenovia Creek began flowing downstream from East Aurora and Elma," the city said in a statement Wednesday night, adding that the Department of Public Works, Buffalo Police, and Buffalo Fire are aware.

City officials are urging anyone who lives in flood-prone areas to "take precautions and remove valuables from low-lying areas in your house."

There is a Flood Watch in effect for Erie and Chautauqua counties until 7 a.m. Saturday, due to a a combination of rain and melting snow. There's a chance of ice jam flooding on some area creeks and streams.

Don Poleto, the senior engineer for the Buffalo Department of Public Works, told reporters Thursday afternoon that, "We still want people we still want people to be aware of these situations because the jams could move very quickly without warning. When that happens the stage and the water behind fluctuates very quickly and begins to overtop banks."
