BUFFALO, N.Y. — Forecasts show a pretty abysmal Halloween night.
For that reason, a number of our viewers took to our social media pages asking the question: Is it possible for trick-or-treating to be moved to another day?
We took that question to the City of Buffalo, the Town of Amherst, the City of Niagara Falls, the Town of Hamburg, and the City of Lackawanna to get a general idea of what the answer would be for Western New York.
Buffalo
City of Buffalo spokesman Mike DeGeorge told 2 On Your Side that shifting Halloween trick-or-treating times to a different day is not out of the realm of possibility, but they're having their Department of Public Works keep an eye on the weather. Any decisions to make changes would happen Wednesday at the earliest.
Amherst
Amherst Town Supervisor Brian Kulpa said they had received a number of calls about this from residents, but the answer to whether or not trick-or-treating could be shifted to another day was "no."
He explained that changing the day could just lead to confusion and headaches because there would still be kids out trick-or-treating Halloween night despite the weather, leading to two nights of kids out knocking on doors for candy.
Niagara Falls
Niagara Falls was considering the possibility of changing the date of trick or treating, but ultimately decided against it. Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster announced Wednesday that trick or treating will be held on Halloween as usual, but the timeframe will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Dyster said safety is their first priority, and having trick-or-treating on Halloween will allow Niagara Falls to safeguard residents. He said they expect wet weather, but will hopefully avoid the high winds and chilly temperatures, which are in the forecast late Thursday night and into the weekend.
Hamburg
Town Supervisor Jim Shaw told 2 On Your Side that the Hamburg Town Board accepted a resolution on Monday that October 31 would be designated Halloween Trick-or-Treating Night for the town. Shaw says there will be no changes in Hamburg regardless of the weather.
Lackawanna
Trick or Treating will be held on Halloween in the City of Lackawanna; however, Mayor Geoffrey Szymanski announced the timeframe has been adjusted. Lackawanna moved it's trick or treating time ahead a half hour, making it 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Szymanski says this decision comes from the weather. The temperature is expected to be warmer on Halloween than the weekend, and the poor weather is supposed to begin after trick or treating ends.
