Amherst burglary case goes to grand jury

Chilean suspects waive felony hearings in Amherst Town Court on Monday.

AMHERST, N.Y. — The grand jury will now review the cases of three Chilean nationals who were arrested in connection with a series of residential burglaries, which occured in Amherst in late January.

Christian Rodriguez-Perez, 35, Itan Jaidel (aka Hector Rene), 36, and Angelica Rivera Perez, 27, all waived their felony hearings in Amherst Town Court.

The Erie County District Attorney's Office says they are tied to several break-ins at homes and were found to be in possession of stolen items like a safe, purses, jewelry, and cash.

A weapons charge against all three was previously dropped.

Jaidel and Rivera-Perez remain in custody on $50,000 bail.

The judge agreed to release Rodrigues-Perez on the state charge because his attorney pointed out he had been released on his own recognizance at a previous court appearance.

But a source says federal agents may try to seek a retainer for Rodriguez-Perez to keep him in custody. Police say they were caught with several forged or fraudulent documents.
