NEW YORK — The Western New York region could enter Phase 4 in the state's reopening plan in less than two weeks.
Western New York reached Phase 3 on Monday. Gov. Andrew Cuomo's reopening plan leaves two weeks between each phase to monitor hospitalization trends.
However, the state has not yet released plans for what businesses can open or their safety guidelines for Phase 4.
2 On Your Side asked Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul about it Monday.
"When we do get to Phase 4, it will allow for somewhat larger gatherings, venues for perhaps concerts, we don't know how social distancing will work. Arts, entertainment, recreation are some of the broad categories allowed in Phase 4," Hochul said.
If Phase 4 allows for larger events, it would bring some relief for local tourism. Visit Buffalo Niagara's President Patrick Kaler said the industry has taken a financial hit.
"Typically we welcome over 8 million visitors to our community, Erie County, annually, and it's a $1.8 billion industry, and we know it's not going to be that for 2020 and probably 2021 as well," he said. "We are anticipating getting back to 2019 levels by 2022."
Kaler said that the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center is not expected to open for events until September, just in time for what would normally be the busiest season.
"We have been working to reschedule or postpone as much business as we possibly can," he said.
Phase 4 could also bring with it wedding season.
Avanti Mansion has been working to reschedule weddings for the past few months. Owner Laurie Clark said they are looking forward to welcoming employees and guests back.
"The new norm is a wedding can take place on any day," Clark said. "So we have a very, very busy fall and we'll actually be doing weddings five days a week now."
There are still many questions surrounding this phase. 2 On Your Side was told more information from the state will be coming out soon.
