BUFFALO, N.Y. — The 14-year-old girl who was shot and killed following Saturday's shooting on Alexander Place has been identified as charter school student Jazzmine Fomby.
“A 14-year-old young girl not even given a half a chance to live,” said Pastor James Giles, President and CEO of Back to Basics Outreach Ministries. “There's no way at 14 she could have done anything to merit being killed the way she was — nothing she could have done to nobody”
Fomby was one of six teens shot outside an apartment building following a party that night. Four males were taken to ECMC. Three were treated and released while one 15-year-old male remains in critical, but stable condition at ECMC. Hospital officials tell police he "is on his way to recovery."
A sixth teen was grazed by a bullet and refused treatment, according to police.
Buffalo Police said they responded to a call around 10:21 p.m. Saturday for loud music and groups smoking outside. That call was quickly upgraded to a fight call. Police were on scene for 25-30 minutes dispersing several groups of kids fighting, stemming from a large party at a private residence with hundreds in attendance.
At 11:10 p.m., Buffalo Police responded to an additional call from the same location for shots fired. That’s where they found the six teens shot. Police believe that the shooting was tied to the fight earlier in the night.
At this time, they have not announced any suspects, and the shooter remains at large. Police did say they believe there were three handguns carried at that party, but they provided no further details.
Detectives conducting a canvass of the area did find shell casings on Alexander Place so that is where they think the shooter or shooters were standing. They would not say how many shots were fired.
Police continue to look for those involved in the shooting. They say they have received additional information and tips from the community Sunday evening.
“I want to make it clear to the shooter or shooters involved in this: consider turning yourself in,” Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said. “If you have any conscience or any remorse that you killed a 14-year-old girl, you should contact the Buffalo Police and turn yourself in. This is a senseless crime to open fire on a group of children, absolutely makes no sense whatsoever.”
Giles and his Back to Basics outreach program are lending support to the community by being at nearby high schools. He said their focus is to get to the root of the problem that causes violence like this.
“We’re talking about young people that have no comprehension of the value of life,” he said. “It's all a game to them.”
Police also have additional patrols in place as well.
