BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo Police say a teenager is dead after a shooting Saturday night near Alexander Place.
According to officials, six people were shot around 11:10 p.m. All of the victims range in age from 14 to 16 years old.
Buffalo Police tell 2 On Your Side crews brought a 14-year-old girl to Oishei Children's Hospital where she was later declared deceased. Mayor Byron Brown said some of the victims were Buffalo Public School students and counseling will be available with extra security provided by the district as well. The girl who died was said to be a charter school student.
Four boys were brought to ECMC. One of them, a 15-year-old, is listed in critical condition. The three others are listed in stable condition.
A 16-year-old boy was grazed by gunfire, but declined medical treatment at the scene.
Buffalo Police said they responded to a call around 10:21 p.m. Saturday for loud music and groups smoking outside. That call was quickly upgraded to a fight call. Police were on scene for 25-30 minutes dispersing several groups of kids fighting, stemming from a large party at a private residence with hundreds in attendance.
At 11:10 p.m., Buffalo Police responded to an additional call from the same location for shots fired. That’s where they found the six teens shot. Police believe that the shooting was tied to the fight earlier in the night.
At this time, they have not announced any suspects, and the shooter remains at large. Police did say they believe there were three handguns carried at that party but they provided no further details.
Detectives conducting a canvass of the area did find shell casings on Alexander Place so that is where they think the shooter or shooters were standing. They would not say how many shots were fired.
Buffalo Police are asking the public for help in finding videos from the scene — both on social media and from surveillance cameras. They are also asking the shooter to turn themselves in.
“I want to make it clear to the shooter or shooters involved in this: consider turning yourself in,” Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said. “If you have any conscience or any remorse that you killed a 14-year-old girl, you should contact the Buffalo Police and turn yourself in. This is a senseless crime to open fire on a group of children, absolutely makes no sense whatsoever.”
In a statement, Zeneta Everhart — the Masten District representative for Buffalo Common Council — released a statement about the shooting on Sunday:
"As the Masten District Council Woman, and a mother who has been directly impacted from gun violence, my heart is heavy over the tragic events that unfolded in our Masten community late Saturday night, resulting in the loss of a young girl's life and injuries to six teenagers due to gunfire.
"As we approach the two-year mark of the racially motivated massacre that shook Buffalo and my community to its core, the wounds inflicted by that day are still fresh and it is disheartening that despite our efforts, we are still grappling with the devastating impact of gun violence.
"There are no words sufficient to convey the pain and sorrow I feel for the family, friends, and all those affected by the unimaginable loss of the 14-year-old girl who tragically lost her life on Jefferson Avenue, as well as the five other victims who were also shot.
"I have been in contact with the Buffalo Police Department and Mayor Brown's administration and I urge anyone with information to come forward and assist law enforcement in their investigation. We must continue to stand united against gun violence, not just within Buffalo, but across our nation as well.”
