9-year-old, babysitter struck, killed on sidewalk near Rochester

A 2-year-old was also struck and listed in critical condition at a Rochester hospital.

BRIGHTON, N.Y. — Police in suburban Rochester say a woman and a 9-year-old child have died after a vehicle struck them on a sidewalk.

The crash happened Wednesday morning in Brighton when the car veered off the road and struck a utility pole.

WHAM-TV reports a 2-year-old also was struck and listed in critical condition at a Rochester hospital.

A third child walking with the group was not injured.

Authorities said the woman had been babysitting the three children at the time of the crash.

The names of the victims had not been released, and the cause of the crash remained under investigation.

WHAM-TV reports the driver of the vehicle spoke to investigators and was released without charges.

The station reports the crash knocked out power to several hundred people.
