BUFFALO, N.Y. — M&T Bank is warning customers about a text message scam going around Western New York.
As mobile banking becomes the norm nowadays, it's opening up a whole new realm of possibilities for cyber-criminals.
The Better Business Bureau has a full list of ways you can protect yourself and make sure you're not tricked with a text message:
Look at the number
You can find your bank's number online or on your statement to see if it matches up with the one you got the text message from.
Don't click suspicious links
Scammers can send a link to a lookalike website where you can log in and instantly expose your personal information to them.
Ignore 'text (blank)' prompts
It's important to not reply to the "Text 'stop' or 'no' " messages you might receive from a scammer. It's actually a common ploy they use to confirm that they have a real, active phone number that they're targeting.
Call the bank
If you think you've been scammed, give the bank a call. They might have more information about a scam going around your area, including an email address where you can send screenshots to help identify the criminal.
