ELLICOTTVILLE, N.Y. — At this time in December, you would expect there to be plenty of snow instead of rain. That has been causing some issues for ski country.
At Holiday Valley Resort in Ellicottville, the week between Christmas and New Year's is one of the busier weeks for the resort. But the warm temperatures and rain are keeping people from the slopes.
There is definitely more green than white as you look around the resort.
Holiday Valley had 12 of 13 ski lifts and 40 runs operating on Sunday.
A spokesperson for the resort says though the conditions were not perfect Saturday, they were still busy. It was a different story Sunday, though, as the slopes were mostly empty due to the rainy conditions.
"Christmas week has been good. We have a lot of lodging available where people will come and stay for the Christmas holiday. So they are here, but today we had a little wet weather, so it wasn’t as ideal," Holiday Valley Director of Marketing Jane Eshbaugh said.
Holiday Valley was not alone. Kissing Bridge has a message on its phone system saying it will be closed Monday due to inclement conditions.
Many of the people 2 On Your Side spoke with Sunday who braved the slopes said they did it because it was a planned event with family.
"Visiting family, and we thought we’d come check out the slopes, and after Christmas and everything, there’s not a lot of time. So we came anyways, rain or shine," snowboarder Brendon Busskohl said.
The resort is hoping for some more of the white stuff next week in time for their New Year's Eve bash.
