AMHERST, N.Y. — The Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village hosted Indigenous Peoples Weekend on Saturday and Sunday.

The event allows visitors to dive into and appreciate the culture of indigenous people.

The Water/Ways exhibit from The Smithsonian Institute's Museum on Main Street was on display, and other events included the Wampum belt demonstrators, along with Native American music and arts.

"The Wampum belt is something recognizing special events that have happened in the nature of the tribes, and it's showing usually an agreement almost a contract in art," said Karl Reifschneider, curator of the Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village.

Added Bryan Printup: "Water brings us life, and we give thanks to that water because the water brings life to all and us."

That set the tone for the welcome dance. Tonawanda and Tuscororan Nations participated in the weekend event.
