A Tonawanda boy's lemonade stand raises close to $2,000 for Variety Club

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A 5-year-old in Tonawanda is learning how sweet it is to give back to others.

Last month, we introduced you to 5-year-old Carter Dominguez of Tonawanda.

He was trying to raise $500 for the Variety Club with a lemonade stand and garage sale outside his house.

Carter ended up more than tripling his goal that weekend and raising $1,680.

Now he added even more to his total, thanks to a recent visit from Bob Starr, the president of the Tonawandas Erie Canal Gateway Lion's Club.

"Taken back and touched," Starr said. "That a young man could have such credibility and such empathy to help kids who are sick. His phrase, 'I want to help sick kids,' just did it for me."

Bob saw Carter's story and knew his organization had to contribute.

"I took it to the board, and it took about two seconds to pass," Starr said.

The $150 check from the Lions Club brings Carter's total up to $1,830 for Variety Club.

"We thought we weren't even going to hit 500, and this number is outstanding," Carter's mom, Elizabeth, told 2 On Your Side.

She is proud of her son for surpassing his goal, but she's even prouder of what he's learning about kindness and generosity.

"Trying to teach our kids to give back when we can," she said. "That we have enough, we have plenty. We don't need all these extra toys. There's only a couple times a year we can give back, and this is one of them."
