CITY OF TONAWANDA, N.Y. — A young boy set up lemonade stand, not because he wanted to make some money, but because he wanted to help sick children.
Carter Dominguez — a 5-year-old from the City of Tonawanda — this weekend is hosting a lemonade stand to raise money for the Variety Club. It's something he did last year, too, raising $262 for the charity organization.
Carter and his family proudly presented the $262 check from last year's lemonade stand at the Variety Kids Telethon.
He set his goals higher this weekend. Way higher.
"I think I'm going to get to a million, even faster than you know it," Carter said at his Brookside Terrace stand.
Carter's mother, Elizabeth, said the fundraising effort is something the family won't soon forget.
"This is one of the things that we'll always remember, and we want to do it yearly," she said. "We want to make sure that we can get the community together, and raise as much money yearly. We kind of want to just double what we did last year, and we have a goal, and we hope that we can hit it."
Carter just finished pre-K at St Francis of Assisi School. Elizabeth said there's no hesitation from people who have taken notice of his stand.
"They don't even want the lemonade," she said. "They just hand you the money and they just say thank you for what you're doing."
What inspired him to do it?
"Because they need it. We don't need it," Carter said.
He will be pouring some more lemonade and raising some more money for Variety Club on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 283 Brookside Terrace.
The final two-day total, according to Carter's mom? "Not quite $1 million, but I believe we doubled our goal with $1,342."
