Amherst Helping Hands distributes masks and food to struggling families

The women's group was formed with a simple premise: neighbors helping neighbors.

AMHERST, N.Y. — A local women's group called Amherst Helping Hands is giving out food to those who are struggling during the coronavirus pandemic.

Amherst Helping Hands is partnering with FeedMore WNY to give out non-perishable food to families who need it.

It's happening from 3- 5 p.m., Friday, April 24, the first day of Ramadan, at the Islamic Society of the Niagara Frontier Masjid An-noor mosque at 745 Heim Road in Getzville.

People of all faiths and denominations are welcome, because the coronavirus doesn't discriminate.

"That's the beauty of it. All of us here realize we're all in it together. It's not going to be white, black, orange, blue or yellow. It's going to affect every single person, so we have to take care of our neighbors. Buffalo is the City of Good Neighbors, and it has proven time and time again that when things like this happen, people come together," said Yasmin Dara, founder of Amherst Helping Hands.

Amherst Helping Hands will be doing 3 more food giveaways the first 3 Saturdays in May.

Last week Amherst Helping Hands distributed more than 700 masks to more than 200 local families. They'll be doing another mask giveaway soon, and will be offering assistance to the elderly as well.

They say the reason they're doing this is simple:

"We should be thankful for what we hae and share with the people who don't have it," Dara said.
