BUFFALO, N.Y. — Each year, Habitat for Humanity Buffalo partners with the local beer industry to pay for the construction of a new house for a family in the city. The campaign is called the "The House Beer Built," and it typically ends with a big beer tasting event at the Barrel Factory in South Buffalo called "Hammer and Ales."
This year's in-person event got cancelled due to COVID-19, but the online auction is happening through Friday evening. The home it's raising money for this year sits on Woodlawn Avenue in Buffalo, and once construction is further along, Habitat will find a family to place there.
A few days before construction was halted, a group from Big Ditch was at the site working on the home.
"Brewers have been doing for a long time what we've been doing in the city," said Development and Communications Manager Stephanie Lawson. "They've been going into pockets of the community that other people have forgotten or lost interest in, and they go in and they rehab these great buildings. We're going the same thing. We're reviving them by building homes and putting families in those homes and creating some stability."
You can place your bids in the House That Beer Built auction through 8 p.m. on Friday, April 24.
