Electric cars to debut at Buffalo Auto Show

Organizers say it's due to an increase in demand. Depending on the car, it can take up to 30 minutes to get a full battery that will get you at least 400 miles.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Electric cars are making their debut at the Buffalo Auto Show this week.

That's because organizers say there is an increase in demand for electric vehicles here in Western New York.

In fact, the New York Power Authority tells 2 On Your Side it will be installing 200 charging ports at 50 charging sites across the state this year.

Up to four people will be able to charge their car simultaneously.

Depending on the car, it can take up to 30 minutes to get a full battery that will get you at least 400 miles.

"Strategically deploying these fast chargers along the thruway in particular, and then at really, key 30-mile intervals to make sure that nobody ever gets stranded in an electric vehicle in New York, and we think that other states will really start to follow suit," Rebecca Hughes of the New York Power Authority said.

Hughes says installing the charging ports is meant to get rid of anxiety they might have about getting to their destination, while also encouraging people to make the switch to an electric car.

Hughes says drivers will pay per kilowatt of power used, instead of how long it takes to power up their car.

That means you should pay about as much as you do for a tank of gas.
