Cleanup underway after latest round of storms

Heavy rain and strong winds toppled trees on houses less than a week after tornadoes ripped through WNY.

ALDEN, N.Y. — Not even a week after tornadoes ripped through Western New York, Mother Nature came back for more Monday.

Another round of severe summer weather struck the region with heavy rain, winds, and hail hitting Buffalo and its suburbs.

It started in Buffalo with torrential rain, bringing ¾ of an inch in just an hour and winds of up to 60 mph, knocking down trees and shutting down roads.

But areas outside the city saw the worst of it. At one point, a tornado warning was in place over the Pavilion, decimating decks and filling driveways with debris.

Alden saw a similar scene with trees crashing onto homes and sheds.

“It was wicked. The wind was blowing. The rain was coming down. There were small trees and branches,” said Stephen Sojka with Western New York Tree Guys. “This whole area right where we are hit the brunt of it.”

Rose Marie Wyoscki, a survivor of the 5/14 massacre at Tops on Jefferson Ave and a neighbor in Alden returned home to find a sugar maple through her back shed.

“I am overwhelmed. I'm overwhelmed by all this,” she said.

But despite her latest challenge, she’s glad no one was hurt and that the rest of her home is safe.

“I must have some guardian angels up there,” she said.

Over 2,000 customers across Western New York remain without power Monday night, according to NYSEG and National Grid, but the latest estimations expect restoration to occur overnight.
