Now is the time to prepare for winter

As yet another winter approaches in Buffalo, we have tips for staying safe and warm.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — As the temperatures begin to drop in Western New York, we know winter is not far behind.  This is time to get ready for the when the snow falls.

Winter Weather Awareness Week runs from Monday, October 29 until Saturday, November 4 and provides crucial tips for the community on how to have a safe winter.

Community members should start by looking for safety tools to keep on hand in their homes and vehicles.

The Erie County Office of Health Equity says that there is no perfect kit to be made, but having one to keep water, food, hygiene and warmth products should be at the top of your list.

Having an emergency kit put together is important to ensure that you will be prepared with necessities. If you are unsure of what to include in your kit, you can find a list of items here.

Houses should have items from strong shovels and ice scrapers to medical and mobility needs for people and pets. Working out options to receive your medicine and care if unable to travel in advance would be highly recommended.

Having proper fire extinguishers, generator fuel and a first-aid kit will be useful if stocked as soon as possible.

Physical items can be one part of the preparation, but so can skills and trainings like CPR and basic first aid.

Staying up-to date on weather alerts and warnings will not only keep yourself safe, but also the people around you. Keeping up with the weather forecast on your phone or television is important but having a batter-operated radio would be useful if you lose power.
