What's with all the fog?

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The past few days have been rather foggy across Western New York, and we have to thank last week's heavy lake effect snow for that.

During the cool season, Western New York can be a foggy place. One of the main reasons is melting snow.

Last week, most of WNY received abundant snowfall, some places more than others. That snow does have an impact on the air above it. As temperatures warm, that snow pack begins to melt. That process adds moisture to the atmosphere right above it, and as temperatures begin to cool again at night, that moisture will turn into a layer of fog.

You may have seen vast areas of snow over the past few days with a layer of haze or fog just above it. At night, the atmosphere cools even more, and that light fog will turn into a dense fog that can last well into the morning hours.

In some cases, the fog can be so dense that visibility near zero.  So for the next few nights, as the snow continues to melt, and even some rain falls expect more fog formation that could make for tricky travel during mainly the nighttime and morning hours.
