Another year with more than 100 inches of snow. Another round of national negative attention for Buffalo’s weather. Let the rest of the country pick on us for our winters. Anyone that’s been around Western New York for a few warm seasons knows just how good we have it.
Lake Erie is a snow hater’s worst nightmare in the cold season. But in the warm season, it keeps the sky clear and the temperatures comfortably warm most of the time.
Would you believe last summer’s weather in Buffalo was better than in San Diego, CA; Yuma, AZ; and Miami, FL? It’s true, and there are numbers and dermatological factors to back it up.
Last year Buffalo recorded 20 clear days from June through September. During that time, we only had to deal with overcast conditions on 19 days. By comparison, San Diego had 21 cloudy days. Splitting hairs? Maybe. But bragging rights are bragging rights.
How about this one: last summer Miami didn’t mark down a single completely clear day. The city also got measurable rainfall two out of every three days during the warm season. Buffalo average about one rainy day for every three days.
Yuma, AZ will always have us beat when it comes to sunshine. The desert climate is just too dry for clouds to form. But without the clouds, the region roasts. The average high-temperature last summer was a whopping 106 degrees. Buffalo’s giant natural air conditioner, a.k.a. Lake Erie, kept the city at a temperature 79 degrees.
