Weather Impact Alert: Severe thunderstorms possible Sunday across Western New York

There will be potentially severe thunderstorms for Western New York early Sunday evening, especially Southern Tier.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A Weather Impact Alert Day has been issued for Sunday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. for Western New York, especially the Southtowns and the Southern Tier.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued an alert indicating a slight risk for Severe Weather, especially for the southwest portion of Western New York, including Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, southern Erie, and portions of Wyoming and Allegany counties, and a marginal risk for the rest of Western New York.

A cold front will be approaching, and it will bring a potentially strong line of thunderstorms through Western New York, starting Sunday late afternoon, around 3 or 4 p.m., and finally exiting Western New York around 7 or 8 p.m. The storms will first impact Chautauqua and Erie counties, then move east. The northern portions of Western New York could actually receive little to no rain.

Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Allegany counties will see the highest potential for the most intense thunderstorms. These storms could potentially include heavy rain and damaging wind gusts, up to 60 mph. We cannot rule out the chance for some large hail and even a possible isolated tornado.
