Tips for driving in the rain

​Driving on wet roads have contributed to 1.2 million crashes per year, according to AAA.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Western New Yorkers are used to driving in all types of weather, including rain. 

Driving on wet roads have contributed to 1.2 million crashes per year, according to AAA

They offer some tips to follow the next time you're driving while it's raining. 

  • Make sure your windshield wipers are in proper order and that they inserts don't leave streaks and clear the windshield in one swipe. 
  • Make sure all headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals are properly functioning so other drivers will see you during downpours.
  • Turn on your headlights whenever you drive. According to the state Department of Motor Vehicles, New York State Law requires you to use your headlights from when the sun sets to when the sun rises, when visibility is less than 1,000 feet and when you use your windshield wipers, or in fog.
  • Avoid using cruise control. Using cruise control on wet roads could increase the risk of you losing control of your vehicle. 
  • Slow down and leave room. Slowing down can reduce the change of your vehicle hydroplaning. To reduce the risk of hydroplaning, slow down, avoid hard breaking and quick turns. 

Overall, AAA recommends being cautious and take things slow to keep safe.
