One of the warmest winters on record in Buffalo

Dating back to 1939 Buffalo on track to have warmest Winter season in 85 years of records

BUFFALO, N.Y. — With 10 days to go before our winter season officially comes to a close, it looks like the winter of 2023-2024 will go down as a very warm one.

In fact, a record warm one.

Meteorological winter is considered the months of December, January and February. If winter were to end today, this would go down as the warmest winter on record with data going back to 1939.

The mean average temperature, calculating all of the daytime highs and lows, currently sits at 34.2°. The current warmest winter on record is a tie between the winters of 2015-2016 and 2001-2002 which both had average temperatures of 32.9°. To be clear, this data goes back 85 years and there very well may have been a warmer winter before then.

It would take some significant cold air to knock our current number below the values of those two record setting winters. It’s likely, given that the forecast looks to be relatively mild for the 10 days, this certainly may go down as the warmest winter on record dating back to 1939.
