Flooding causes voluntary evacuations in Hamburg during Sunday storm

Twelve people were evacuated from homes at Hoover Beach. There was some flooding but no injuries or major damage. Flooding also hit Buffalo's First Ward.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Western New York is facing strong winds and severe weather Sunday night and a Lakeshore Flood Warning for Erie, Niagara and Chautauqua counties is causing flooding, notably, in Hamburg and the City of Buffalo.

In the Town of Hamburg, police, water rescue and the Woodlawn Fire Department to conduct voluntary evacuations of homes in the Hoover Beach area.

Twelve people were evacuated from homes at Hoover Beach. There was some flooding but no injuries or major damage, according to Hamburg Emergency Manager Sean Crotty.

The evacuations took place on South Shore Drive and Midshore Drive, between Hoover Road and North Shore Drive. 

Hoover Road, between Midshore Drive and Route 5, as well as South Shore Drive and Midshore Drive between Hoover and North Shore Drive, are closed, according to Town of Hamburg Emergency Services.

Route 5 in Hamburg by the Ford motor plant was blocked eastbound at Milestrip heading towards Buffalo.

Buffalo Police reported on Twitter that there is flooding in the First Ward neighborhood and that residents are advised to avoid part of the area. 

During a Sunday night news conference, Buffalo Fire Commissioner William Renaldo advised people to shelter in place and stay home.

"Just stay at home, there's no reason to be out," he said.

Tommy Cerra, a SUNY Oswego meteorology student, tweeted a video depicting flooding in LaSalle Park. He described it as a two to three foot "seiche," which is a type of wave common in Lake Erie and usually caused by strong winds.
