ERIE COUNTY, N.Y. — Lake-effect snow over southern Erie County caused several accidents and led to road closures until the afternoon on Saturday. Multiple agencies including the New York State Police and Erie County Department of Public Works were working to get the roads clear and assist drivers throughout the day.
2 On Your Side spoke with Captain Steven Graap of the New York State Police. He says the increase in snowfall throughout the morning caused accidents and visibility problems throughout the morning.
"We had zero visibility in certain parts of the southern tier and that came across the 219", he said.
Road closures continued until 2:30 p.m. Snow plows were still working to clear some of the roads. Erie County Department of Public Works began working on the roads around 3 a.m. and continued through Saturday afternoon.
U.S. Route 219 has since been reopened in both directions.
