SHERIDAN, N.Y. — A mandatory evacuation notice has been lifted for some Chautauqua County residents living along Lake Erie as a result of powerful storm hitting Western New York.
The evacuation order was originally issued on Friday afternoon. It was lifted at 2 p.m. Saturday.
“This winter storm with blizzard conditions combined with lakeshore flooding creates an exceptionally dangerous situation for many of our residents,” Chautauqua County Sheriff James Quattrone said in a release at the time.
“If residents must travel, we urge them to please use extreme caution.”
Mandatory evacuations were for the entire areas of Hanford Bay and Sunset Bay in the towns of Hanover and Sheridan, including the lakefront north of the railroad tracks, as well as for the properties along the Lake Erie shoreline in the Village of Silver Creek.
The county is encouraging people to go back to their homes using caution. Vehicles should also not be parked on the street to help with future snow clearing efforts.
“I would like to thank our first responders and road crews,” Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel said.
“This storm had the potential to be very dangerous, and our first responders and road crews ensured that the people of Chautauqua County especially those along Lake Erie were safely evacuated.”
The travel advisory issued for all of Chautauqua County was also lifted at 1 p.m., however a State of Emergency remains in effect through Monday.
