Lake effect snow band divides towns

The lake effect snow band can bring a lot of snow to some, and little to others.

HAMBURG, N.Y. — Those of us that live in Western New York are all too familiar with lake effect snow bands that can bring a ton of snow to one town, and little to none to another.

That was the case in 2014 when seven feet of snow fell in some areas south and east of the City of Buffalo, while communities in the Northtowns and Southern Tier did not see much at all.

The same is true here in 2022, as a lake effect snow band has set up shop in similar areas as 2014.

South Buffalo and some towns in the southern and eastern portions of Erie County are getting feet of lake effect snow on Friday. But in the northtowns and Niagara County, not much has fallen. That will most likely change as the snow band is expected to shift north later Friday evening and into Saturday, giving the southtowns a much-needed break to catch up clearing the snow away.

Friday evening, 2 On Your Side's Nate Benson captured the wall of snow moving over downtown Buffalo as it headed into the northtowns.

A tale of two towns. Hamburg on the left under the lake effect snow band and the Town of Tonawanda on the right under...
