Gov. Hochul directs DEC to issue emergency declaration

Eighteen counties will receive assistance from this declaration in order to rebuild their communities.

ALBANY, N.Y. — The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is issuing an emergency declaration Friday after direction from Governor Kathy Hochul.

Remnants from Hurricane Debby caused damage across the state and, according to the Governor's Office, 18 counties will receive assistance from this declaration in order to rebuild their communities.

The DEC is now able to expedite permit reviews for rebuilding waterway infrastructure and structures, restoring waterway channel capacity, and other activities that are important for the impacted communities.

General permits are available to be applied for in order to do work, such as stream restoration, backfilling and stabilization.

Counties supported by this declaration include Allegany, Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Essex, Franklin, Jefferson, Lewis, Ontario, Oswego, Schoharie, Schuyler, Steuben, St. Lawrence, Tioga, and Yates.

“After Hurricane Debby upended the lives of countless New Yorkers, I’ve directed DEC to issue an emergency declaration to expedite recovery efforts so that families and businesses can rebuild,” Governor Hochul said. “My administration is working around the clock to provide resources and assistance to communities in need, and we will continue to make every effort to ensure a full recovery.”
