GETZVILLE, N.Y. — We've mentioned this before, but it's worth repeating because it's to keep you and your family safe.
As you clear your driveways and sidewalks, make sure your furnace vent and vents to other gas appliances are clear of snow. It can build up quickly.
Some people need to dig vents out two or three times in a matter of a few hours, because of the falling snow and the drifting snow.
Also, firefighters are hoping you can lend a hand and clear around hydrants. Making sure they're accessible during an emergency can make all the difference.
"That saves us a lot of time," Lt. David Morales of the Getzville Fire Department told 2 On Your Side. "The response time for first responders is already increased due to the bad storms.
"When we get there, we want to be able to fight the fire immediately instead of having to take a few minutes to dig a hydrant out. It may only take three or four minutes to dig a hydrant out, but if you are sitting on the side of the road and watching your house burn, those three or four minutes can feel like an eternity."
